We are now living in a union area. Before today we noticed a few differences - people working on scaffolding have to work certain hours, etc. Today, however, is a different story. This morning at about 5 am the transit workers went on strike. This means the busses and subways are not running. Some of the trains are running, and the taxis are running, or at least they are trying to run. Cars heading into Manhattan need four people in the car in order to get South of 96th Street. As a result, people, including the mayor, are walking to work across the Brooklyn Bridge (by the way it's 22 right now, in the teens or single digits with windchill in certain areas). There are long lines of people waiting to get on trains - one line wraps back and forth down four blocks and it is people just waiting to get on a train! I am very thankful I only have to walk across the street to get to school, but I have a feeling some of my classmates may have more trouble getting to their exams this week. We were planning on going Christmas shopping over the next few days but perhaps those plans will be adjusted. It is illegal for the workers to go on strike and they are already in court attempting to work it out. Hopefully this strike will not last too long. But it is kind of neat that now we can say, "Oh yes, we were living in New York City during the transit strike."
Smile: One exam left to take tonight and one exam to turn in tomorrow night and then I am done!!!
Extra Smile: Christmas gifts are arriving! How fun!!
